BRIGHTSTAR TEAMS UP WITH GAMACOM TO DELIVER WIMAX TO RURAL AREAS OF PERU
Brightstar Will Provide Redline’s RedMAX WiMAX Systems to Improve Broadband Services in Central Peru
December 15, 2008 – Miami – Brightstar Corp. and Gamacom, a telecom operator based in Lima, Peru, today announced that Brightstar has been awarded a contract to provide Redline’s RedMAX WiMAX systems for deployment in Central Peru. This partnership will enable Gamacom to offer Internet, Voice over IP (VoIP), video and data services to its rural subscribers beginning in December 2008.
Carlos Vizcarra Coz, President of Gamacom said, “Brightstar, a distributor of Redline WiMAX technology, was awarded the contract to provide WiMAX systems to Gamacom as a result of both companies’ commitment to WiMAX interoperability. Additionally, Brightstar’s significant local presence, as well as its global reach and extensive distribution capabilities were critical factors in our decision.”
The Peruvian government will finance 70 percent of the project through the FITEL fund, Peru’s national telecommunications investment fund, which dedicates a percentage of the revenues of the country’s telecommunications companies to develop communications systems in rural regions. Total investment for the initial project will be approximately USD $450,000.
With a population estimated at more than 29 million residents, Peru has an internet access penetration of approximately 26 percent of its population, according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). By bringing WiMAX technology to Peru, Gamacom and Brightstar will help increase high-speed wireless broadband connectivity throughout the country.
